The Author: Rebecca A. Holdorf I call myself a pouting Bloom County/Outland fan who deeply misses Berke Breathed's daily wit in our local paper. My entire life can be captured in a single statement Opus made in a long-ago cartoon segment on What is Life? He said:
"You are born, you live, you go on a few diets, and then you die." What insight!
Actually, I'm a cat lover, or I seem to be one that attracts cats, I'm not sure which is the case. So when I ran across this little gem below, I had to put it on here somewhere. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
My personal philosophy is similar to that expressed here by the Dalai Lama. "Metta," is the Pali word for “lovingkindness.” I am not Buddhist, nor do I have any other particular religious affiliation. I believe in the power of "love for all," just as Jesus ascribed to, and feel that our primary task on this earth is to love everyone, no matter how difficult that often seems. The Dalai Lama phrased it this way: “My religion is kindness.” Through loving kindness we feel more inner and outer peace. Kindness and compassion recognize the sameness of all. There is no separation in thought or action from those around us--we are one being with similar needs and wants--all searching for appreciation and acceptance. By honoring the goodness inherent in others, I honor the goodness of myself as well. "Oneness" is a word I use frequently in my books. When you can actually feel the oneness of all beings, you know at your deepest level that we are all in this experience together--all acting as one great consciousness searching for reflections of itself. We are all satellite sensors of the Source, exploring and emoting to continually expand awareness. This is how humanity evolves--by expanding consciousness and raising itself out of the mire. Sometimes that group consciousness takes great leaps, and other times it struggles along under institutionally-imposed restrictions. But as individuals, we have control over our own consciousness evolution, and by expanding our own consciousness we automatically raise humanity's consciousness a fraction. Enough fractions added together raises it by a whole level. So no matter what you see going on around you--hold your own center--hold your own concept of loving kindness and be that person who sees all others as simply a reflection of herself struggling through life's distractions. Radiate your loving presence wherever you go--be the love you wish to see and feel from others--and they are more likely to reflect that love back to you. Becky
