  How HYPNOSIS Began...

Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian medical doctor in the late 1700’s, utilized a number of energy devices, such as magnets, in his healing practice. He also learned how to induce a trace-like state in his patients by what was called at the time “mesmerism.”

His techniques were so successful that they inspired other medical professionals to experiment with inducing trances in their patients from light states of gentle relaxation to deep states called “somnambulism,” which is the state where hypnotic suggestions are more easily accepted by the unconscious mind.

Other significant founders of more advanced hypnotic methods were 19th century medical doctors Dr. James Braid (Scottish surgeon) and Ambroise Liebault (French MD).

Well-known psychiatrist, Dr. Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychoanalysis, used hypnosis with his clients in the early 1900’s with phenomenal success.

During World Wars I & II, when pain drugs were in such short supply, medical hypnosis assisted in battlefield surgeries, utilizing the analgesic and anesthetic benefits that deep-trace states could produce.

Even today, some dentists are trained in hypnosis for clients who cannot take certain anesthetic/analgesic medications to kill the pain.

In the early 1940’s, the genius psychiatrist Dr. Milton Erickson, created innovative approaches to helping his clients, by supplementing his simple trace-inductions with specific language that penetrated quickly and directly to the unconscious mind.

Two of his protégés, Dr. John Grinder and Dr. Richard Bandler—are the two best-known for developing Erickson’s “metaphor story-style” of hypnosis, into what is now called Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), a technique that uses key words and phrases throughout the session.

When these amazing techniques are combined and utilized by skilled professional hypnotists, the results can bring peace and harmony back to once-chaotic lives.

Over the last forty years, these once “breakthrough treatments” have been standardized and expanded, establishing hypnosis as the most effective technique for positive transformation in the lives of many.
