Sparrow Chirping (5/1/79) From
the choice of the dozen Extending
from beneath the frozen Water
jumping over the rocks Sparrows
chirping in Hemlocks Beside
a church on a river, It is
to life they deliver. The
least of birds that is hither Survive
the cold, last the winter And
sing in constant short note Always
from 'neath their dingy coat. En
masse they tongue the chorus God's
winter harmony for us. In
plain brown they are enshrined Impossible
amongst the needles to find. What
better symbol to show our love Than
deer or whale or dove. And
to bird watchers it is absurd But
this is my most favourite bird.
