Touching Emotions

We are indebted to Dr. Mikao Usui for sharing the mystique and techniques of Reiki. In the early 1900s Dr. Usui began a personal quest to re-discover the healing secrets of Jesus and Buddha. From an interview he gave in the late 1920's, he said he was granted portions of this knowledge in a mystical vision where he was engulfed in light after a three week period of meditation, fasting and prayer on Mt. Kurama in Japan.

JEWELRYReiki, which means Universal Life Force Energy, is the name of the energy treatment that Dr. Usui brought back to share with the world. Traditional Reiki, called Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui's System of Natural Healing), was brought to the west by Hawayo Takata, who resided in Hawaii at the time.

Various forms of Reiki have evolved since then. I was originally trained in traditional Usui Reiki, but another form I have also been attuned in is Karuna Reiki® and I (Rebecca Holdorf) now can attest to the increased effectiveness of this higher-frequency attunement. Karuna Reiki® (which means "compassionate action") is very subtle, but very powerful and focuses on using the love energies as a healing force. I liken Usui Reiki as the Yang aspect of Universal energy--more forceful and direct, and Karuna as the Yin aspect--more feminine and subtle. I personally feel a faster wave frequency in my hands as the energy flows through me with Karuna. I use both forms in my Reiki practice, and each has distinct features that offer maximum benefits to the client.

Does Reiki work, you ask?

Unequivocally, yes. Sometimes the effect is subtle; sometimes dramatic. I've seen the energizing and recuperative powers firsthand on people and animals; and I've felt the energy surging through my own hands and into another person. I can't explain it other than to say the energy of the Universe is always with us and all around us--WE are energy units. A Reiki practitioner becomes like an energy channel to increase the flow of natural, life-force energy into the energy body of another organism. The greater the attunement level or spiritual connection of the Reiki practitioner, the stronger the current that flows through that person to the recipient of the energy. (See The History of Reiki for a more in-depth discussion of that subject.)

Reiki can assist in realigning the energy input centers in the body (the chakras), it can remove energy blockages, and it can increase the flow of natural energies throughout the recipient's body. That is the key point of any energy therapy--energy must continually "flow" throughout the body. The energy must keep moving or it stagnates. When it hits a blockage, it builds up in one location creating an inflammation. On the other side of the blockage, there is little or no energy flow, which creates an energy-starvation to the organs and muscles/nerves that would normally be fed from that location. That is why proper flow is so important.

Sometimes we lose energy at specific spots--it seeps out of us--like a slow leak in a tire. That means we have a break in our energy field allowing the energy to drain away. It is critical to reseal those seepage spots and put the energy flow in proper motion again so it nourishes all parts of the body as it was intended to do.

The longer I work with energy, and I've been a Reiki Master/Teacher for many, many years now, the better I personally understand how the energy cocoon that encases us functions. When that layered energy field is damaged or disarranged, the physical body soon feels the devastating effects of energy chaos or energy loss.

There is a Chinese medicine saying that describes the importance of energy flow in the body: "Where blood flows, chi goes;  Where chi goes, blood flows."   With "Chi" being the Chinese version of the Japanese "Ki," so circulation is definitely affected by how the energy is flowing over and through the body. And likewise, stressful conditions create tight muscles, which restrict blood flow, which creates energy blockages. It's all connected. This is one way that a problem in one area of the body can be traced back to another area that originally restricted the energy flow, and likewise, the blood flow to it.

I've worked with clients who's energy field initially seemed totally chaotic--with energy shooting out in all directions and no distinct energy flow patterns down the body and out the appendages. This is often seen in nerve-related disorders where nerves carry the electrical impulses from brain to body parts. The electrical circuits are in disarray--the appendages don't function well because the energy signals aren't getting where they need to go--the flow pattern has been disrupted and, in some cases, completely lost. So, when I find this chaotic energy disruption in a client, I focus on reestablishing that energy flow pattern from head to feet, and in helping the body return to its natural function. This in turn, naturally increases circulation to the limbs and throughout the body. And the body slowly begins to heal itself. I'm not the one doing it--I'm not "the healer," per se. The increased and realigned energy flow allows the body to heal itself. That's why Reiki is so effective as a stress reducer, and as a re-charger to depleted energy fields.

On the mental and emotional levels, Reiki is amazing in clarifying thought, and in lifting out the emotional debris still clinging in our hearts and minds. Emotional wounds are every bit as devastating as physical ones, and create disruptions in the energy body, particularly near the heart and abdominal area. Emotional wounding can actually create physical problems because of the restricted energy flow (and likewise, blood flow) near such a vital organ as the heart.

So, Reiki is an amazing energy-therapy that benefits people in every possible way: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is hard not to be affected "spiritually" when you see the things Reiki can do for people and actually feel the flow of this wondrous energy surging through you into someone else. And even as just the recipient of the Reiki energies, it clears off the residual "gunk" that clings to our energy fields allowing us to feel lighter and more free--more "connected" to something greater than ourselves.

I'm sold on Reiki and was from the very beginning--after reading the first book on it and receiving my first attunement in it.
